Mt. Diablo School District and SunPower Celebrate Solar Project 05-02-12
WALNUT CREEK --the Mt. Diablo school district and SunPower Corp. have teamed up to build what they assert is the largest K-12 solar photovoltaic installation on earth. The district will spend about $80 million to install a 12.1-megawatt system at 51 sites, but that initial expenditure is estimated to save the district $220 million over 30 years. It was funded with proceeds from $348 million Measure C bond approved by voters in 2010. Superintendent Steven Lawrence said the district expects to save $3 million a year on electricity bills, while also generating $3 million a year in California Solar Incentive rebates for the next five years.

iDataCenter Will Use Landfill-Powered Bloom Boxes 04-30-12
Apple will use methane biogas from landfills, which will be transported via a natural gas pipeline system, to generate electricity for its massive data center in North Carolina. The raw biogas will be cleaned and separated to increase the methane content and remove unwanted components (including sulfide, chlorine and sulfur) before being injected into the natural gas pipeline. The biogas will be converted into power using fuel cells from Bloom Energy, which is ramping up its production to meet demand from Apple and other new clients.

Many homeowners waste electricity – and money- on homes with inadequate insulation, poor air sealing and outdated and uneven heating and cooling systems. Under SolarCity’s new Home Energy Loan program, the company hopes to make homes be more energy efficient all while being both accessible and affordable.

Facebook Seeks Patent on Cooling Automation 03/05/12
Engineers from Facebook are seeking a patent on a data center cooling system that uses a load balancer to automatically shift workloads among racks of servers. The system can also manage fans that adjust the volume of air in either the hot aisle or cold aisle. This intelligent cooling system has servers, sensors and cooling equipment “talk” to one another to provide advanced management.

Chevron, Bridgelux team up to install LED streetlights 03/01/2012
Oil giant Chevron and green energy startup Bridgelux are joining forces to bring a new generation of streetlights (LEDS; light-emitting diodes) to cities in California. LED streetlights require 50 percent less power and far less maintenance than conventional streetlights.

Stulz Introduces CyberRow Cooling System 02/28/2012
STULZ Air Technology Systems announced the release of CyberRow, a rack cooling system for small or medium data centers that can also provide targeted spot cooling solution for large data centers. The in-row design allows the CyberRow units to be placed close to the heat load, allowing data center owners to manage thermal loads.
